Urad dal chilka is also called black matpe with husk split or split black gram. The lentil is split, keeping the outer black covering intact to reveal the creamy interiors. In comparison to whole urad, the split version of this pulse is easy to cook. The flavours and seasonings spread evenly when split black gram is cooked with right ingredients.
